Vermont Senate President Pro Tem Phil Baruth to retire

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Baruth says he will retire from the Senate at the end of this legislative session. He made the announcement on the Senate floor Friday morning and got a standing ovation from his fellow senators in recognition of his years of service.

The Democrat who represents the Chittenden Central district was elected to the Vermont Senate in 2011, and elected president pro tem in 2022, following Becca Balint’s election to the U.S. House.

Senator Baruth serves on a number of key committees in the state Senate, including the Judiciary Committee, Appropriations Committee and as chair of the Senate Rules Committee. He’s helped shape major state policy during his time in office involving state gun laws and secured funding for Vermont’s landmark child care law.

Baruth says he does not plan on offering any endorsements for his pro tem position or Senate seat.
