This Day in History: Controversial whole herd buyout

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – On this date in 1986, about 200 Vermont farmers agreed to participate in the whole herd buyout, a controversial program aimed at stabilizing the dairy industry.

Participating farmers sold their cows for slaughter in a move designed to reduce an oversupply of milk that was driving down prices. The buyout met with only short-term success.
