Scam texts impersonating Vermont DMV target drivers

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Many Vermonters are getting scam text messages that claim to be from the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles.

Several WCAX viewers reached out to us about the phony messages.

The text may say you have an unresolved traffic matter and if you don’t address it by a certain date, you could face consequences.

It claims to come from the Vermont DMV, but pay attention to the sender’s information. Legitimate Vermont websites and emails end in vermont.gov.

DMV officials say they never send any texts or emails demanding payment. Those are sent by mail.

If you get a text like this, don’t click on any links or provide any personal information.

You can report the scam to the FTC.
