Events commemorate Veterans Day across our region

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – We’re honoring the men and women who served our country, and giving a little extra attention this week to those now working in their communities. National Veterans Small Business Week

The Small Business Administration is hosting its National Veterans Small Business Week starting Monday.

SBA initiatives make it easier for veterans to certify a business as well as get and pay off loans.

Part of their veteran support initiative is a Boots to Business Training Course at the SBA offices in Williston. That’s Tuesday from 8:30 to 4 p.m.

The training is free and is open to veterans and service members, as well as their spouses.

Monday, Vietnam Veterans of America will update their local honor roll.

The Honor Roll lists Vietnam service members from 1959 to 1975 from Rutland County.

Only about 125 people were originally on the list when it was dedicated in 2000. It has grown to 357 people today, as more veterans step forward to have their names added.

The honor roll is located at the Rutland County Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Main Street Park.

Seven names will be added at a ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday.

A park in Plattsburgh is also gets a bit of love on this Veterans Day.

Assemblyman Billy Jones will give a check to the Lake City and members of the local Disabled American Veterans Chapter, on Monday.

The $125,000 has been secured for improvements to the Plattsburgh Barracks Veterans Park.

That check presentation is scheduled for Monday at 11 am.

Vermont leaders are showing their appreciation for Veterans. In a statement, Senator Peter Welch said, “I have a deep appreciation for those who have worn our nation’s uniform and put their lives on the line. We are forever indebted to their service and sacrifice,”

He also highlighted the need to expand benefits like the PACT Act, which helps service members exposed to burn pits.

On Monday, Sen. Welch will speak at Vermont Law and Graduate School to commemorate Veterans Day.
